As a preparation for the session about 'Technology' next Wednesday I found an interesting website which offers various online learning courses. Below I will describe the website.
Description website
The website offers online education for teachers (e.g. courses on developing the reading skills of students, English language development and classroom management and instruction). If teachers subscribe for a course they get a password and a username with which they can log into the online learning environment. They also get contactinformation of other students and their instructor. All education takes place 'at distance' in the online learning environment, for example by posting messages on the forum, having an online discussion and handing in assignments and getting feedback through the internet.
The website offers different kinds of courses, namely instructor-led courses, instructor-facilitated courses and self-paced courses. These courses differ in the way they are structured and supported by an instructor. An instructor-led course looks the most like a traditional course. An instructor-facilitated course is still supported by an instructor, but it lets the students learn at their own pace. Lastly a self-paced couse is not supported by an instructor.
Example
I think this website is a good example of how technology can be used to support learning (in this case distance learning). The online learning environment is well designed, it's very flexible since the student can choose how to use the environment and the students will not feel 'lost', since there is an instructor who provides guidance and structure (i.e. if the student chooses an instructor-led or an instructor-facilitated course).

Hi Leonie,
ReplyDeleteNice example, thank you. Would you consider following a course through this environment? What about it is for you attractive (or not)?
Petra
Hello Leonie,
ReplyDeleteI have been very much interested with the plan of your blog especially the way you put your work in the blog short and the idea to have the weblogs of all members in the class. But I was wondering if the description website is a pedagogical approach or a CMS. I guess its one of the CMS rather than pedagogical approach. Please let me learn more from you.
Hi Leonie
ReplyDeleteI also find it an interesting example, but miss the information on the pedagogical approach. It is very much about integrating technology into the curriculum, but there is little information on how the course content is offered, unless I am overlooking it?
